So "Grading" is done and dusted... I think this is how the teams will line up. Probably predicting a 3 horse race for the season with Logan, Spartans and Gold Coast all carrying some serious talent. Rip got some good results at Grading but will be interesting to see what happens when they play with the big girls!!

        Logan
        SW Pirates
        Spartans
        Gold Coast
        SC Rip
        Gold Coast 2nd Team
        Spartans 2nd Team
        Capitals

                Power Rankings after 4 Rounds

                Gold Coast Waves
                Southern Districts - Spartans
                Gold Coast Breakers (2nd team)
                Rip
                Logan
                Capitals
                SW Pirates
Southern Districts - Titans (2nd Team)

Top 2 have established their dominance!
Logan are in all sorts of injury woes the poor girls... battling hard but with 3 out of their top 4 players off the court they will struggle in the short term.
GC Breakers and Rip game was an interesting result. Now Rip have finished playing the bottom of the ladder they have a tough run to finish the first half of the season having to play the top 2 teams in the last 2 rounds of the year.
With Phoenix and Ipswich topping the Div 2 ladder - it is looking like Titans and Pirates would be the bottom 2 at risk of swap over challenge... Breakers vs Pirates game this weekend will tell the story on how the Pirates season is going to pan out??

Player Review - Strength And Weakness
Lulu Twidale - S = leading the scoring stats and shows she knows how to finish at the hoop W = prone to foul trouble. Lazy in Defence and quick to call switches. Cherry picks a little too much
Alice Dart - S = knows how to finish and runs the floor hard. W = drops her head when missing shots, shy on contact with bigger players in key
Harriet Baker - S = works hard around the basket and loves contact W = mid to long range shooting
Layla-J Cameron S = Court vision and play making W = doesn't like contact or contained defence.
Jade Peacock S = Fitness levels is extreme. Just continuously runs the floor both ends. W = Little lost with man on man D. Allows player to beat her off first step.
                Hayley Mcdowell-White S = beautiful shooter, play making W = lazy in D
Destiny Mino S = defensive hustle W = turnovers with passing through the mid court
Jessica Petrie S = using her length and post moves W = driving to the hoop... handles aren't quite ready yet
Payton Ross S = really long and athletic. Can shoot which makes her hard to defend with a big. W = lack of confidence in taking open shot. Gets bumped easily by larger players
Olivia Mcgrath S = good length and mid range shot. W = slow in decision making and a little robotic in moves.
Holly Stone S = intimidating length inside W - very slow and lacks transitional abiltity either end.
Michalea Mercer S = rapid quick ball handler W = poor shot selection and constant driving to the hoop. Too little to get a drive away
Allanah Anthony S = good court vision and has ability to pass well W - shooting is poor and no aggression to the hoop
Madison Pitman S = left hander who can shoot mid range W - lack of confidence and poor emotional control

I am a parent of one of the girls that a strength and weakness analysis was put forward. I for one appreciate feedback on my daughter from someone else's perspective. I also wanted to lend you my support for attempting to provide a weekly overview of the Premier league competition. It's great to see some commentary and totally understand it is just one persons opinion and not taken to be derogatory toward any of the players in any way. Hope you continue to take the time to blog your thoughts and ignore the comments from the narrow minded and narrow sighted "Guest" who decided to go on a personal attack. That is not what the blog is meant for and is just showing their immaturity toward the game and your contributions. With thanks

                Power Rankings after 5 Rounds

                Gold Coast Waves
                Southern Districts - Spartans
                Gold Coast Breakers (2nd team)
                Rip
                Logan
                Capitals
                SW Pirates
Southern Districts - Titans (2nd Team)

No changes after round 5 to the ladder or rankings.
Games to check out are: -
Rip vs Waves - How are the Rip girls going to go against one of the top 2 sides after their good performances so far?
Capitals vs Titans - Can the Titans get a win? They have plenty of talent if they can gel a bit more. Maybe the bigs will play inside a bit more? They have 3 of the biggest girls in the comp but don't seem to have a game plan to use an inside game with them??

                  Power Rankings after 6 Rounds

                  Gold Coast Waves
                  Southern Districts - Spartans
                  Gold Coast Breakers (2nd team)
                  Rip
                  Logan
                  Capitals
                  SW Pirates
Southern Districts - Titans (2nd Team)

No changes after round 6 to the ladder or rankings.

Round 5 wrap up - no surprises.....
Rip vs Waves is indicating Rip are established in the middle of the pack as per current ladder.
Capitals too strong for the Titans - leaving Titans languishing at the bottom of the table......

Round 7 to finish the first half of the season
Logan vs Capitals - Logan should run away with this one now they have injured players back on board.
Spartans vs Rip - Expect the Spartans to be too strong for the Rip.
Pirates vs Titans - battle of the cellar dwellers... Can't pick this one... Neither team with a win, so someone is going to come away happy......
Waves vs Breakers - First team carrying too much top age talent in this one. Easy win for the Waves.

Yep, we are still 5 months out from classics but as a discussion point, if I was looking at potential QLD selections based on current form and availability, then the squad would look something like this.

Note - plenty of time left before selections and a lot of girls working hard at the moment so this is just a snapshot of where we are at right now. Certainly don't mean to offend anyone if their daughter is not on the list - just observations from seeing games so far.....

                    5 - Jessica Petrie / Summah Hanson
                    4 - Payton Ross / Harriet Baker
                    3 - Lulu Twidale / Jordan Billing
                    2 - Jade Peacock / Kiama Tahere
                    1 - Layla-J Cameron / Hayley Mcdowell-White

                    Reserves
                    Destiny Mino
                    Holly Stone
                    Allanah Anthony
                    Alice Dart

Obviously Phoenix will come up from Southern Cup so will be interesting to see how Hanson and Byrne play in Premiere League.

                      I would
Image they will do well against the lower ranked teams but the true test will be when they play the 2 top teams

Hi, I have seen multiple games. The observations are taken from watching current U16 rep games, CBSQA games, sweet sixteen games, school games, U16 State Classics last April etc. (Even some club games.....).
It's always interesting to watch games as an independent observer without any ties to a team or certain player. In the broader basketball community there is always someone watching and listening!!!!!

                  • #13
Phoenix couldn't beat Spartans second team even with 2 NPP players... oh well, guess one of them will be at Spartans next season so will just have to wait to play Premiere League. Will probably still make Qld team anyway when the parents are so heavily involved with BQ...

Probably shouldn't be so confident that the one potentially moving to Spartans is guaranteed a spot in the First team anyway.... Spartans always fielding 4 teams and have a deep talent pool... certainly no guarantee of a premiere league spot.... every association is rife with "old boys club", parents contributing "Sponsorship" dollars, nepotism... etc etc.... and only gets worse when you go to the bigger associations.... Might be a bright spark in a smaller catchment but dropped into the ocean and might not get the same look....
In saying that... BQ can certainly influence associations as well so might be able to ride that gravy train a little longer.....

She'll stop playing basketball within 2 years the way the parents carry on and have gotten her everything so far. When she figures that out plus the carry on from the family another promising player will be lost.
Agree though a big fish in a VERY little pond sometimes looks much better than they are....
