Continuing on from someone else here's my men's report card.

A Mackay: Recruited well and finished with the #1 seed. An A in anyone's books.

A Townsville: Finished equal top with Mackay and secured a home final after also putting a very good team on the floor.

A- Logan: With Ruck and Logan 'agreeing to part ways' (lol) few expected the Thunder to actually fare better. Not intending to blow smoke up his arse but is Luke Cann the next big thing in the coaching ranks?

B+ Rip: Did well enough for the horses they had. Lacked a stand-up-and-take-notice win but they'll be at home for the first win of finals which is always a positive.

B Caps: Timmy C really made a difference, doubtful the Tarrants could've obtained the services of anyone more suitable to the system they run. Sucks Dusty missed the season but they are looking dangerous now after an ordinary start.

B Cairns: Did well for a no frills teams, would've spent the least money out of the 8 finalists.

B- Ipswich: will be disappointed they missed out on a playoff berth but over achieved all the same

C Rockhampton: Low key season for the Rockets, they'll be relieved they scored a playoff spot.

C Toowoomba: Got four more wins than anyone though they'd have. Bozeman obviously a beast but the other main dudes played their parts also.

C- Gold Coast: Dudes get a low pass for falling in to the playoffs. What was an excellent team on paper wasn't great on court, too many guys playing for themselves.

C- Seahawks: Did as well as anyone expected in their first season. Fortunes improved when the club mysteriously parted ways with Lawyer.

D South West: Incredibly disappointing. Can Micky D coach? What went wrong?

      D Gladstone: Eh

      E Phoenix: What a mess

E Spartans: Gibbo quit on the team, don't blame him. Can anyone recall the last time a Spartans side has finished bottom? So much for that SEABL experiment.

How much do you think Mackay chased that game knowing they only had to beat Phoenix that weekend to finish top?

B+ for finishing 9th, spending a ton, not beating a top 4 side, scraping 3 wins against teams 5-8.

I guess the women's program will get an A++++++++++++

Fairly typical. Presuming that you are either a RIP or CAPS fan, let's go with the obvious, a Caps fan. The same club/team that complained that the Rip rings were out of alighnment, and wanted to move the game to their home, as a rumour goes. I have to agree with above, you don't like? don't go!

Was at the caps v rip as a neutral (Phoenix fan). Was a cracker of a game but my god the refs make it obvious whatís going on. Terrible calls all night and then rip win on the buzzer and they say it was late.
also Zac carter trying to fight rip fans is a disgrace.
the caps sure arenít a team the south can be proud of.

Can you really blame Zac, when the RIP green men run onto the court and instead of celebrating with their team run up and abuse him, on a basket that didn't even count?

hahah laughable. the green guys ran onto the court to celebrate. the basket didnt count and zac started telling them to fuck off and they left the court. The coach then told them to fuck off at least 30 times. I know the caps arent used to playing in front of energetic fans but their players and coaches are a disrgace

Are you serious? The green men ran on and abused Zac? You can see in the footage they literally run onto the other side of the court to where zac was cause he was on the bench.

Another year, another 3 of the top 4 from the North. The South teams will be better for the experience, but it's a whole new game when the finals start.

How did Rod & Fandy know in their podcast they were getting a local ref to do their game so they could blow smoke up him pregame.
Whatever it cost it was sure worth it.
Seems to be a common theme this year with teams unhappy and constant dubious calls. I thought there was full time development officers for the officials now? What do they do ?

Not an upset at all. I would question quite heavily Cannís ability to coach in finals. All the raa raa wonít get you over the line when you actually have to coach this time of the year. Same thing happened last year with the women.

Cairns managed to shoot the lights out! That’s a pretty solid reason why they won! Cann’s passion for the game is unrivalled. I wonder if there is any coach who had/has been so successful in this league they have taken years to win or even been a deputy (assistant coach) to learn the ropes.

Luke’s current win/loss record is phenomenal, find some one that was so successful in their first 2 season and at his age and with that experience. Give the man some credit. Players win - coaches lose.

Qbl should look at adopting the finals format similar to the SBL in Western Australia. So when teams play out of their skin for one game - they have to do it again in a 3 game series to win again.

He will be better for the moment!! He will be back and I can guarantee he is already awake this morning working on a plan for next season.

Hard luck Luke and the thunder boys!! Congrats Cairns

Same thing with Arousi, regular season looks great but in Finals in QBL and SBL has been outcoached.

A lot of decent regular season coaches out there but not a lot of coaches that can adapt to Finals basketball.

My issue with the comment is that it seems to be a personal attack and then attacks all the coaches in general that lose finals!
To say that a coach is decent during the regular season and then "can't adapt in finals" is absurd and to be frank clearly uninformed about the work involved with prepping for a final.

Of the coaches who lost finals, Arousi and Cann would be well in the running for Coach of the Year and Conlon left his run to late with the team only finally clicking and Tweady has proven to have won finals previously...
            Pretty silly comment really!

Small point but cedar was an injury replacement for crocs and played 2 games. He was a 5 point player for qbl as he was listed on the unrestricted list from BQ.
The point really isn’t how many games played but more the fact you’re clearly more talented than your average 2 point player if you’re getting a call up to the nbl. Hence why Euro league div 1 is blanket 10 points, not 10 points if played X number of games.
This exemption was given in error by an incompetent administrator as per all others this year.

Wow - Arousi takes a good team not a great team with NBL or College players to a top 4 spot and loses in OT to a team with an NBL Veteran who had 37 and gets ragged on? Luke Cann, takes Logan to 3rd, plays a team that simply shot the lights out and scored 20 more than there season average and gets ragged on? Sounds like a salty non finalists or QBL coach wannabee getting his courage up!!

        • #14
Does anyone know why there was a Townsville ref on the Townsville game? No other final had a home ref? Surely this conflict of interest should have been avoided with a simple switch of refs?
Not sure if the comment about blowing smoke on the podcast is accurate but if it is and they knew thatís a really bad look.

Happy to help you with your whole post, so you can better understand how the North has dominated for the past 13 years.

            1) that's the exact amount Shaun Bruce was offered from the Gold Coast. Words from his mouth. Wellington just came over the top with more in the NZNBL

            2) The import GC cut was a cheap foreigner living on the GC, and they cut him for a guy who's price tag has been $1000 a game for the past 10 years. Plus they fly him in each week.

            3) Both Mackay coaches Ian Haughton and Cam Tragardh both live in Mackay

            4) Both Townsville and Mackay have spent substantially less on their roster. Mackay lost the MVP Bruce, All Star 5 Walker, Diop Harvey and Gange who were all paid players. They've brought in Blanchfield, an import who played in the big V and an NBL development player.

The Meteorettes brought in 2 imports and that's it.

So what are you talking about? The North just spend smarter not larger. And there is strong cultures there!

You need to give Doc Brown the time machine back cause it's not 2014 anymore where biggest budget wins. Gold Coast and Phoenix proved that this year!

The actual real downfall of the South is accountability! There just is none!

Basketball is a really small community in QLD so what you spend is public knowledge. Players and GM's talk. So you have these teams who have spent big and failed miserably (by that meaning not even hosting a final, or being bounced out early, or even not making the finals) but then claim they didn't spend big. No one ever puts their hand up and says "we just got it wrong, and we will try bounce back next year".

It's always "well we don't have the resources of the North" which is utter crap! But I guess it's the easy sell to your board and corporates when you don't succeed. Hell even GC jut stated in the paper that this year was part of a 3 year plan!!!!! Haha. After taking to the papers and talking championships, and home finals earlier in the year!

You can take to these forums all you like to try throw uninformed people off the scent, but the basketball community knows who spent what.

We live in a hot take world, so proclaiming someone is the second coming of coaching, or that this South team is gonna break the drought is the big hot take each year! And year after year it's false!

Seems there are some teams in the QBL that tried to buy a culture a place a bandaid over programs which are fatally flawed to chase the perennial powerhouse north clubs. The QBL championship hasn’t been won by a club south of rockhampton since 2006 when the Spartans beat Rockhampton before heading to the SEABL.

Take a look at big spenders like Phoenix, Gold Coast, South West and Gladstone this season. They’re sucking their junior programs dry by being irresponsible with chasing the QBL title dream that just isn’t attainable with the years of losing culture which has been established. There aren’t actually too many juniors of those 4 clubs playing minutes for their QBL teams. Gladstone imported 7 men’s players this year and had just one win at home to show for it, that is pathetic. They had the worst defense in the league with the most out of town players in the league, Heads would be on the block if I’m in charge at that club. Their women’s team was even worse with not one local player on the roster. 5 total wins between two teams. That isn’t sustainable when they don’t have a strong junior base to support it.

Phoenix men were the biggest laughing stock in the league this season. Their coach had two years of false dreams and broken promises, just doesn’t get what it takes to build a program and be professional.

Gold Coast spent the most money in the league and almost got it right at the end of the season. But their coach is once again a perennial bridesmaid. How many wins does he have over top 4 teams in the playoffs in his QBL careeer?? ZERO! They set themselves up to fail without strong leadership or a level of accountability to go with their investment.

South West were on the cusp of something last year but got it all wrong this season by not retaining McGrew & Kendle. These one year rentals of hired guns just doesn’t help build a championship caliber program.

Look at Mackay, Shaun Bruce spent multiple seasons there, Blanchfield keeps going back, Chris Cedar is becoming a club stalwart, Tragardh may become a more permanent fixture after his success in the first two years. Townsville have had a core group together for 3 years without wilcher, Crawford, Rees, Tudehope, McCully & Baker. Consistency is the key.

It is great to see clubs having a crack and investing in their programs to compete with the big dogs in the north. But let’s not pretend the road to the title will ever run through a south club. The winds of change will strike again this offseason with plenty more cash being splashed around. The north will be smart with their recruiting, utilising the professionalism of their programs and ability to attract bums on seats to gain the signatures they need to be at the pinnacle of success year after year.
