  • QBL 2018 - Round 14

    Friday
    South West @ Gold Coast
    Ipswich @ Mackay
    Caps @ Townsville

    Saturday
    Rip @ Seahawks
    Caps @ Cairns
    Ipswich @ Rocky
    Toowoomba @ Spartans

    Sunday
    Phoenix @ Spartans
    Toowoomba @ Logan

My three takeaways from Round 13:

    1. Rip thumping title favourites Mackay by 35. Wow.

    2. Ippy gets two much-needed wins, keeping their playoff hopes alive. One of those victories a 20-point margin against a South West team that hasn't lived up to reasonable expectations this season.

    3. Logan extinguishing Toowoomba's playoff chances with an away win, Boze getting chucked early in the match didn't help.

Eyes on Ipswich this weekend. It's unlikely but if they can steal one win on their road double they can stay alive. if near full strength, the resurgent Caps will also be interested to watching on their FNQ trip. Where's Jake Davis been the last few weeks?

Biggest under-performers based on roster - Gold Coast, SWM and Gladstone

Spartans spent many years bringing talent in for the SEABL to compliment older locals, looks like they did little development work

Caps will finish 5th by beating Cairns this weekend...

Biggest under-performers based on roster for mine are Spartans, Gold Coast and Phoenix, although if Gold Coast can somehow jag a win in Mackay first week of finals than all that will change.

    Women's Predictions
    Friday
    (W) South West @ Gold Coast - Seekamp is back this week. SW by 20+.
    (W) Ipswich @ Mackay - A difficult and important trip north for the Force. Mackay will return the rotation players missing last week. Mackay still need to win to stay in the playoffs and have a lot to play for here. Force by 5 in a grind.
Caps @ (W) Townsville - Caps peaked early in the season. They have nothing left to play for here and no chance with Garbin returning to the lineup. Townsville by 15.

    Saturday
    (W) Rip @ Seahawks - This will be the battle for one of the last playoff spots. Both teams have been inconsistent all season and this reflects in their current standings. Seahawks won the game the first time they met but that was a long time ago. Rip to win in the revenge game.
Caps @ (W) Cairns - Caps will have to travel again having played Townsville the night before. Another 5 hour trip on the back of a game tough the night before doesnt bode well. Neither team has anything to play for so I expect a sloppy affair. Cairns by 5 in the end.
Ipswich @ (W) Rocky - The game of the round. Ipswich are looking good in the top 4 but this could be a disastrous weekend for them if they don't manage to get the road double. Rocky will be without Blair which could prove to be the difference given the Force's strong perimeter game. Its going to be close but Im going to tip in the favour of the Cyclones who will be fresh vs the travel weary Force. Rocky by 3.
Toowoomba @ (W) Spartans - Toowoomba are horrendous. Spartans are legit. Spartans by a million.

    Sunday
Phoenix @ (W) Spartans - On the back of a double header you'd expect one team to have an advantage but Spartans will have managed the fatigue factor the night before without any concern. Phoenix beat Spartans the first time around but there's no way that happens twice. Spartans to get this one comfortable by 12 or more.
Toowoomba @ (W) Logan - Logan will look to end their disappointing season on a positive note by pulverising the hopeless Mountaineers. Thunder to win by 50.

Mackay women have secured a playoff spot by beating RIP last Friday night and worst they can finish is 8th, best is 7th.

^^ Thank you for the breakdown - I agree except I'm picking the Phoenix women to beat the Spartans in a tight one.

Have also shown at times they don't like each other very much and are emotionally fragile. Does beating up on depleted South West and a tired Cairns count as back?

If you didn't believe it already, the Spartans are officially a circus with Thommo playing tonight.

        And they're losing to Toowoomba.

        By 15.

        At home.

Prepare for an even bigger circus tomorrow when the Phoenix come to town. Heck even Robbo and Stolly might suit up too!

Everyone writes of Ipswich all season, here they are now proving everyone wrong. What Riches has done with that group is nothing short of remarkable.

What a load of absolute rubbish. The league is the strongest it's been from top to bottom in 15 years, and is head an shoulders better than SEABL (talent wise anyway, not the league being run).

And don't be a clown and say you think Ippy should be a top 6 roster, or that you knew they'd be competitive. You were no where to be found when they were written off. Muppets moving the goal posts to take away credit from teams that deserve it. Pull the other one it plays jingle bells!

Jason Ralph is a capable pg but do you rate him higher than Wilcher, Tueta, Anderson, Larkins, Willis, Young, Bozeman, Rayshawn from Logan, Rhys Martin, Fisher, Gibson?

And you say "import" like they're all Jordair Jett. Import just traditionally means "from America".

          Please think before you speak

I live by the comment "people only think your stupid if they are quiet, but by opening your mouth you prove it"
You are a real Muppett, Ipswich were written off as bottom feeders who'd be beaten by 50 each week. To have a shot at the 8 is an awesome achievement.
Well done Ippy, you've surprised everyone

A disgraceful display of sportsmanship from both teams today to finish what was a somewhat enjoyable game. The carry on from Hurst and Bishop for most of the game was embarrassing and they should be made an example of how not to behave on the court to juniors aspiring to achieve what they have. In the same breath the Spartans male assistant coach has a long history of agitating players and the league should take action against both him and Rebecca Lewis for their abuse of the Phoenix players. Likewise hurst should be before the tribunal for bringing the game into disrepute.

I personally wonít be back to another Spartans QBL game this season. That display today wonít win them any fans

Typical Spartans really. Even when my children were involved in junior rep basketball years ago, the behaviour and language of their coaches, players and spectators was extremely questionable. Basketball Qld refused to deal with it then and nothing much changes there so I can't see them dealing with it now!

Word on the street is that BQ have made Tueta a 2 point player but Rip had to take a player off the roster?!? Interesting result, they accepted the case made yet still "fined" them for doing so.

BQ is a laughing stock at the moment from top to bottom. Needs a complete clean out for everyone. Stop giving jobs to the yes people and put some real people in there that know basketball.

Need to get aligned with the rest of the country first and foremost.

        Sorry rant over lol!

          No penalty imposed.
BQ put their hand up for not managing the process as per the rules.
Rip hasn't removed anyone off the roster in recent weeks.
Sutton was removed due to season injury back in May

When has BQ EVER put their hand up for "not managing the process"?? They penalised them 2 points, Rip used Sutton as the player dropped because he had been dropped due to injury. If he wasn't injured they would have had to drop a player. Unfortunate for Sutton but worked well for Rip.

How can BQ penalise Rip when Rip asked for a dispensation pre season and received one from the league manager?

Also, why mention independent tribunals and minutes played deemed not sufficient to make a player 5 points? Since when did minutes come into it?

How many times before these non basketball knowledgable people realise that it’s not just about minutes played but the fact alone you get a call up to an NBL gig is what makes you a 5 point player. The points cap is meant to be about talent. To liken Tueta an NBL player to the likes of Rory Sutton is laughable. Both “2” point players.

      • #14
With the BBI / Coenrad matter, everyone was making reference to a NBL player being assessed on their past 2 seasons.

Yet on the QBL rules it states nothing of he sort, only the previous year.

So is everyone grabbing their torches and pitch forks too early....or have the rules been changed online to suit the cock up ?

People were upset over the created rule to "re-rate" a player midseason, after another club was denied that courtesy in past seasons. Keep up please

So if bris were fortunate enough to win a title this season, what a hollow title it would be knowing you scammed the system be taking advantage of an inexperienced incompetent administrator to do it.
