  • QBL 2018 - Round 13

    Friday
    Logan @ Toowoomba
    Mackay @ Rip

    Saturday
    Cairns @ Logan
    Spartans @ Caps
    Ipswich @ South West
    Mackay @ Phoenix
    Townsville @ Gladstone

    Sunday
    Townsville @ Rocky
    Seahawks @ Ipswich
    Cairns @ Gold Coast

My three takeaways from Round 12:

    1. The Seahawks pushing South West to the brink then topping Spartans, sending them to outright last. Things seem on the up for the Seahawks since the new coaching group has been installed.

    2. Rip dropping their two northern games. Not a surprise as such, but they're now precariously placed to see a home final slip after this was seemingly a gimme not long ago.

    3. Ipswich beat the Rollers on the horn, summing up Gold Coast's season.

Cairns @ Logan is the pick of the bunch this weekend. I'll be keeping an eye on the Toowoomba/Ippy games also with each of these teams desperate to win and stay in the hunt. A loss pretty much guarantees they are gooooone and seals the top 8 as it currently stands.

Rip played as well as they can and Mackay played about as poor as they can...
Makes the race for top spot more interesting!

Mackay has Ipswich and south west for the last 2 games they will easily beat those team by 25+
Won’t change too spot but I wouldn’t mind Townsville hosting for once instead of mackay or Rockhampton

Controversy in Toowoomba V Logan game. Bozeman ejected after only 12 minutes by trigger happy ref. Mountaineers go down by 12. People pay to see the elite players not prima donna officials.

Spectators and sponsors pay to see elite athletes who are professional and display good sportsmanship.

Not sure if it was the Prima Donna refs or a Neers team that need to put their attitude aside . All came from Bozeman getting rejected. ... Hold your tongue for crying out loud. A he was not alone Derksen was way worse. And if you donít have it STOP shooting the ball.

If you watch the video on the Toowoomba facebook page about half way through the second quarter you can see and hear the ref call both T's in less than 3 seconds. Prima Donna sounds about right.

It’s never a good look to blame the refs

Wholeheartedly agree, a few players need an attitude adjustment. Derksen coming down and throwing up brick after brick and sulking is not the way to step up and get your team back in the game. Also not pretty to watch.

For a guy who spent time at the AIS, then 4 years at college in the US he probably thinks he is the star of the program, but at 6'9" he should be averaging more rebounds that fouls, and if he wants to play outside then he probably should be shooting better than 1 out of 3 and have more than 2 assists a game.

So that's how you stop Bozeman. Shocked by the Mackay result. Pants pulled down.

Yep, some players have left this UGLY sinking ship, also this would have to be one of the most disappointing teams to ever to have been put together with a massive budget. Unfortunately the mix between a first/second year coach, and the players he couldn’t control, ones who HE picked for his team (old offensive players with MASSIVE ego’s who don’t play D) has not worked (WOW!!!!!), and thus has also resulted in the coach himself handing his 4 week resignation, 3 weeks out from the finals.

Very realistic rumor is, coach is going to Spartan’s next year (head’s up BT) and RIP looking to merge with Phoenix due to financial troubles.

Rip won’t seek a merger, they’ll let Phoenix dig their own grave and die a miserable death.

For what was such a promising start, Phoenix has completely imploded.
Totally agree about player recruitment, it's a part of the game that that can get blinded by talent....
Players have walked out, the coach has been told he isn't returning, about the only positive is that juniors are being blooded...
Outside of the Spartans, they are the most disappointing team this season.

Phoenix and Rip could never merge due to the ego's involved with the two clubs.

So RIP keep all their competition points it seems whilst being clearly over the "CAP" just like Gladstone?

Off Mackay's destruction of Gladstone and their minutes played last nite fresh legs should prevail tonight or off sails home GF'S

Brisbane Caps also making a big push at the top 4! Theyíve got a big north qld double next wkend then round 15 they get to play the leagues worst defensive team on the road in Gladstone. If they get all 3 and USC drop another game will they slide into the top 4? Is this the best chance Brisbane have had to win a title in recent years? Do they have enough size to deal with the Mackay, Logan & Townsville?

Tim averaged 15mins 54 seconds for last NBL season and more year before, above the 14 mins therefore restricted unless he was a Brisbane Junior. He was SD junior. Did he play with Brisbane at some time during his junior years?

Tim Coenraad is unrestricted and averaged 13.7 minutes per game during rounds 1-13 of 2017/2018 NBL season. This is the cut off point when lists are forwarded to every second tier club in every second tier competition in Australia. Tim was available to any SEABL/QBL team etc that wanted his services for season 2018 as an unrestricted player. Mat Hodgson on the other hand was restricted at this point but finished the season as an unrestricted player due to his game time falling over the latter part of the season. He was still classed as restricted because of the cut off point. The cut off point is so that clubs can complete their recruitment with plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming season. Nobody is cheating, teams are following the rules as agreed to by the club delegates Australia wide.

Exactly. BQ cleared it because there was no other option for THEM!! They were hardly going to say yeh the league manager fíd up loads of points and unfortunately we donít have the time to replay games and cut players and points etc so our bad, sorry !!
They took the cowards way out. Think itís safe to say this league manager will be a one hit wonder.

You are missing what I am saying... Income is important to each club obviously.

Some could argue that it is probably harder for southern teams because they are competing for sponsorship dollars (2 teams on the GC, 2 teams on the SC, 4 teams in Brissy) and also trying to put bums on seats when there is a choice of teams to go see on a weekend.

What I was saying was that we have to be realistic in that everyone is playing within the rules, no one has cheated. Clubs have put in their player points based on their interpretation. Two people/clubs will see things completely differently.

Regardless BQ (or more specifically an inexperienced comp manager) approved the points allocated.

All clubs are working within a framework and a set of guidelines and rules.

Sometimes the rules get used in a way not intended and then have to be modified. This should be done at the end of the season.

BQ should cop it on the chin and say "yes, we will have to look at that in the offseason because it can be interpreted that way".

I honestly believe that everyone is playing within the same rules. Some clubs have interpreted rules in different ways and used it to their advantage. If the rules need to be changed to avoid that happening again then BQ needs to take care of that as the governing body but you cannot do it mid season.

Thanks for the peanut slur, restored my faith in the shite stirring on this site lol!

There might not be a cash prize at the end but there’s certainly sponsorship on the line for a large number of clubs involved.

Also, since when does someone being new to a role give them a free pass? They’ve got more staff working on the qbl than they’ve ever had and the points system has been in place for 5 years. That’s 5 years of past points info available for them to look at if they’re unsure.

Defending clubs that have “interpreted” the rules differently is embarrassing. How can the same people interpret rules differently year to year? Zac Carter wasn’t a 1 last year why would he be this year?

Face up to it, people saw incompetence and took advantage to cheat. Plain and simple.

Will be interesting to see what is done to change the rules next year so they are no longer open to interpretation.

Wear your Peanut status like a badge of honour mate!

You're back at it again! Please save me the sob story of how hard it is for the Southern Clubs to come up with cash for QBL. The big dogs like Gold Coast, Spartans and Brisbane only need (and do) dip into their thousands of juniors fund if they need a leak plugged or new player. The Northern teams QBL program is 100% run by corporates and sponsors! So losing games to teams that are over the cap literally costs them tens of thousands.
