It's a bit difficult to find on the QBL page. You have to go to draws, then click on the finals tab. If the BQ Comps manager knew what they were doing, it would have been publicised to the general public via social media and on the homepage.

          MEN

          MARLINS v RIP
Cairns at home is a tough beast to better. Where is Hurdle at ? The speed of the RIP will make the contest interesting, but the size of the Marlins roster will see them take the W at home. Marlins by 10. Good turn around for the RIP but more depth in the bigs is needed.

          CAPITALS v ROCKETS
The Rockets will go into this one thinking they have a chance due to the W a few weeks back. Nope. Back then it was a double header with no Anderson....in Rocky. Flip the switch, Caps will win this one by 20+. Time for Richo to take on the HC position ?

          HEAT v PIRATES
SWM travel to Townsville without Downer who is in Lebanon with the Boomers. Gotta give the nod to the Heat here as the Pirates have just been to inconsistent. Heat by 10

          METEORS v THUNDER
Logan had a horrific start to the season, so the fact they have made finals is a win. But that is where it ends. Mack town will come out in force for this one, and the Meteors are too deep to let it slide. It is just a pity the atmosphere in the new stadium has lost some of the fear from visiting teams. Mackay by 10.

          WOMEN

          SPARTANS v PIRATES
Even with half their team missing at times the Spartans got it done. No different here. Spartans to keep rolling into the playoffs with a 20+ win

          MACKAY v IPSWICH
Ipswich managed to string a few wins together to scrape into the finals. This will be the last stop for the Force with the Mackay girls looking for a matchup with the Power down the track. Mackay by 15.

          POWER v FLAMES
The Power at home will always be a tough get, with the girls overshadowing the men for many years. Matchups are quite even but home court win get them over the line. Power by 5

          THUNDER v CAPITALS
For me the Thunder have been a bit of a surprise packet this year with good vets and good youngsters. Capitals have won some good games and lost some silly ones. Can't see their season progressing to week 2 of the playoffs. Logan by 15.

            MARLINS v RIP
RIP seem to have lost their way of late and it's a bad time to come into poor form. The Tueta brothers need assistance but i don't think the RIP have the depth.

            CAPITALS v ROCKETS
Brisbane get their reward for finishing on top of the ladder with a game against one of the two teams who scraped into finals. Can't see anything but a comfortable Caps victory and as ever, anyone on the Caps roster can step up on the night.

            HEAT v PIRATES
Didn't know Downer was away and that will hurt Pirates. Having said that I genuinely believe Kendle and McGrew are good enough to cause an upset here. Pirates in OT.

            METEORS v THUNDER
Mackay are still my favourites to win the whole thing and even though I've seen the Thunder play some great ball at times I don't think they'll topple the Meteors on the road.

Why would Richo take the reigns in Rocky? You're abbot slow if you think this was an excellent fight back from Rocky! Their import was injured for the first month of the season and they only had money for an NAIA kid to replace him and hold the forte. The import big that was sold to them was an absolute beast but arrived in Rocky still rehabbing a serious knee injury (basically lied and said he was ok) Tweedy actually found a stud in Hassan and battled al the way back to the playoffs!!! Teams like Spartans and Phoenix spent a fortune and couldn't get there. Rocky had the purse string pulled heavily shut this year and they STILL made it to the finals!!! If you think that isn't an outstanding wffort in itself then in my opinion you are a fool. You should check out more than box scores and ladder position, there's actually some really cool stuff that goes on in basketball. I know you're just asking a question which you're completely entitled to do. But stupid questions usually get pasted.

Mackay have just sold out their stadium. 1040 tickets sold. Is this some kind of record for the QBL? It's the first ever sellout since going to the new stadium. Don't think it will be too pleasant this week, especially with the Women's team having a home qtr as well so the locals should be in full force by then.

I don't know how big the purse was ar Spartans and Phoenix but surely Meteors a nd Marlins are way up there. The money at Rip was $50k + to kept Hurdle with the Tueta bro. And these team did make playoffs so money works for them. Caps spent wisely but still have a payout. Unfortunately the southern teams don't have consistent spectator numbers to balance the books and the money has to come from the club funds.

            forte = fort

Happy to help you out bro.

For Rocky to make the playoffs given what they experienced it is an outstanding effort. There is a lot more happening in Basketball than boxscores and ladder position. Like the Rockets beating the Caps on the 2nd stage of a double header without Anderson. Flip that road trip around and Rocky lose, Mackay win. Rocky would be out of the finals and Spartans would be in.....not that they deserve it mind you. Rocky dropped a game in week three to a terrible Ipswich etc etc etc Simply put the Rockets are not the same terrifying opponent that they have been for the last 10 years, and that isn't going to change with a couple of good imports.

"If that road trip was reversed Mackay win and Rocky lose and Spartans are in the playoffs"

If my auntie had bollocks she'd be my uncle!

The rd 3 loss was when they had NOBODY!!! No fowler, No Hassan. An Ippy came out of the blocks like a bat outta hell too.

Maybe Brisbane should of "feared" them a bit more last night. Though I'm sure they did once the 8 seed was up 20 on them. You are way too quick to dismiss 15 years of winning basketball and culture. Will it be l roses and champagne each year? No. But the good organisations scramble and make it work. People bag Rocky, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns for spending big and being "loaded". This year everyone was bagging Tweedy for not having enough talent and just not being good enough. He's done it with and without talent now. Stop changing the goal posts! His body of work should mean he is there in that job until HE decides it's time to go.

All of the people and keyboard warriors calling for good coaches heads the second they are down should hang their heads in shame. Or at least had a rest during the offseason so you can prepare to say dumb shit next year.

Not really a surprise. Never seen an association go down the toilet as quickly as they have in the last few years. Unless you include the Clippers/Phoenix debacle.

Well you used to go to a vibrant stadium with supporters and a good atmosphere and this year's trip was completely the opposite of that experience. Clearly the home fans had voted with their feet because there was barely a home supporter in sight.

Sounds to me like a coach who knows his time is up but his ego won't let him go quietly. The town won't let the club fold too many good people involved, just a very poor culture that doesn't promote winning and development. Some great juniors coming through!
Very easy for Cockram to recommend the club pull out of QBL now, absolutely no acknowledgement that he has recruited poorly and has no distinctive game style even though he predicted finals at beginning of the season. They have enough local talent but no winning culture or clear direction to improvement. Hope the neers stick around.

The league is becoming very heavily reliant upon a team being able to recruit 2 class players and then balance that out with 5 local and a couple of kids.
For all the people on the GC, they should be deeper. For all the players at BBI and Spartans they should be deeper. Capitals run 3 imports (Rychart Inc) a couple of locals, an old guy and a couple of kids. Spartans run 3 imports (Jervis, Gibson, Jeffries) a couple of locals and then some development guys.
Ipswich the same. Sunny Coast the same. Gladstone the same. Rocky the same. The north a little different with the NBL links over the past years.

Toowoomba have some good locals, especially Aleer. They just did not know how to use them. They need to spend the money and attract a Coaching Director who can work with the athletes and the coaches.

Most associations have limited stock wanting to work in that space.

We need a second tier comp in the southeast to meet the needs of those that that can't afford or justify bringing in lots of external players just so they can compete. Recent examples here are Northside, Bundy, Caboolture, and now maybe Neers. Otherwise bball will continue its slow slide down the list of mainstream sports.

        • #10
Respect your input Ben but financials aren't the issue for tbar neither is the local talent. The locals don't want to play for the coach it's that simple!! Ultimately the coach didn't recruit well import wise and couldn't get the players they had playing as a team. On paper they had the talent, but when someone like the before mentioned Aleer no longer wants to play for a coach who quite frankly doesn't know how to coach there's an issue. They will play qbl next season, sponsors are already opening the checkbook.

There are some very good match-ups this weekend, bu there is a very good reason why people are talking about Toowoomba. They are a club that has stayed loyal to basketball in this state, and they are faultering. Same thing happened in Bundy, which points to a bigger problem. There is little support and development being done in local programs in the realm of coaching / players beyond what is desired for a State Program. Most of the really talented kids are now heading off to college and the lure of the QBL is becoming less and less.

              1. Have a look at the amount of people registered on BQ's books in Qld and honestly tell me that all teams including those front and central in the city could have a roster 20-30 deep. It is not the case. Most SBL programs are full of players just out of juniors not ready for QBL. Great breeding ground sure, but not ready.

              2. If your QBL Coach was to leave today, how many ready coaches does your club have...and would they want the job ?

              3. Looking at your U/18 program (and U/16 for girls) how many players do you have that makes you think....they'll play QBL ?

I think the truthful answers to these questions will show you why Toowoomba talking about leaving, Bundy leaving, Gold Coast struggling, Ipswich struggling is of great concern.

            MEN

            MARLINS v RIP
Didn't Cairns 'luck' out into a home final. RIP will be out there playing physical with nothing to lose. They are one team that has the guard depth to match up decently with Cairns. Cairns are filled with proven vets in Heuir, Weigh and Pearlman who have been there before and that experience should help get them over the line. Cairns by 8

            CAPITALS v ROCKETS
A match up of two completely different styles. Brisbane love shooting the 3 and playing 'small' and Rocky have size and want to exploit you in the paint. Rocky will rely heavily on their starters and I think they will only go 6/7 deep but only give their bench 10min total. Brisbane will run and gun for the full 40 and expose Rocky's zone. Brisbane by 15

            HEAT v PIRATES
South West have been rolling for the last part of the season however fell at the final hurdle on Sunday. Now they have a flight up north instead. Townsville also didn't have the finish too the season that they wanted so both teams will be hungry for a win. Battle of Baker v McGrew will be worth the price of admission itself, the game will come down to whether Townsville can contain Kendle and SW can make sure PC doesn't get going. Townsville by 5

            METEORS v THUNDER
Congrats to Mackay for selling out their new stadium, that's a lot of $$$ to make off 1 night for the club. Both teams having the bye in the last round so they are both in the same boat coming into the playoffs with rest. Both teams have depth and talent in every position, Logan need to somehow contain Bruce and Mackay need to hope Diop can stay out of foul trouble and guard Young. Lucas Walker will be the X Factor here as long as NBL preseason and travel doesn't have him too fatigued. Mackay by 7

            WOMEN

            SPARTANS v PIRATES
Spartans have rolled this season, their depth is unmatched especially with their international players back. Pirates will be happy to have made the playoffs but this will be over early. Spartans by 20

            MACKAY v IPSWICH
Like the Spartans, Mackay is now full strength with their NZ players back also. Ipswich have been inconsistent the whole season, and Walker with be a tough match up for Mackay but they will get the win at home. Mackay by 15

            POWER v FLAMES
These two teams have had close games both times this season. Richardson-Smith can flat out score, but will need to play the full 40 for the Power. Townsville are deeper and if Gladstone get in foul trouble they could struggle, but the home court advantage should be enough. Closest womens game of the weekend, Gladstone by 8

            THUNDER v CAPITALS
Thunder playing a home final on a Sunday, why is that? The Logan girls have been solid all year, and will be too good for the Caps women here. Logan by 18

Yeah true that will be tough.
Im not from rocky or a rocky fan.
I was just pointing out the fact that not many gave rocky a chance and discounted their win 2 weeks ago due to a 2nd game of a tough CQ double header without Anderson.
Whilst highlighting Brisbanes inability to get it done in the big games that count.
You can win 14 or 15 games a season while predominately beating up on a weaker south ( with exception of this season)but come finals time it's always a different level and history has proven they just haven't quite lifted to that level whether qtr, semi or finals series.
              Just an observation

Everyone plays by the same "points cap" so you can't bring in more than 2 restricted players. It's the same rules for everyone.

The QBL is a semi-professional league, but there will always be two sides of the the coin. Those that think a team should consist of local, developed talent. And those that accept teams will bring in players both restricted and unrestricted to fill out a roster. I have no issue with the bringing in of players, especially now when the world is smaller and other options prevail. My biggest issue is where a club spends big, uses money from social/junior programs and ultimately places all the focus on the elite.

Brisbane Basketball would have to be the biggest association in Qld, with the best resources and faulted at the line Sat night in front of an underwhelming crowd. The hand full of Rocky people in the crowd made more noise. The Caps have probably won the most regular season games over the past 5 years compared to anyone.....but come up short each time. Why ?

They lost because of this from the 3 point line 13/51 (25%). Crowd was terrible - can't help but think it's because the off court stuff has gone down hill significantly.
